Episode 04: 85 Pike
Seattleites are well known for avoiding downtown tourists destinations. When tourist come to visit Seattle, the places they may want to see might be, the Space Needle, Pacific Science Center, Seattle Aquarium, the Great Wheel and of course Pike Place Market. The 6 story market has 500 small businesses that spread out 9 acres. I have only been there once before this last trip and it was long before we had our two boys. So today was a rainy pacific northwest day and what better way to spend it inside a building with alot of history.
Start the day off right
At The Crumpet Shop, a locally family own restaurant since 1976, where you can order a homemade chai and watch them flip crumpets on the griddle… How cool is that?
Many hidden gems down under
While alot of the main attractions are on the first floor there is hidden gems that sit below on the lower levels. Down there you will find the world-famous Giant Shoe Museum and the Market Magic Shop which has been around since the early 1970's, making it the oldest Magic Shop in the Northwest. Down the hall from the Giant Shoe Museum is Sweetie's Candy, a great place to buy gum for your kiddos if you feel compelled to leave your mark on the Gum Wall?
Coffee is life
Back upstairs, the busy day calls for a cup of joe at Storyville Coffee. While you're there getting caffeinated, take a seat to enjoy the views of Elliott Bay and the Great Wheel. The boys loved watching all the ferry boats and container ships passing by.
Also upstairs, don't forget the photo op with Rachel The Pig in front of Pike Place Fish Market. There you will witness throwing fish from the fishmongers. Just around the corner from them is a nice little donut stand where they make them hot and fresh in front of you. It's a great place for an afternoon snack and they have a small eating area next door.
The Local Farmers
Simply buying fresh produce or the beautifully arranged flowers, supports the market and maintains the mission and values of Pike Place. If you are still there during the evening or arrive later in the day, there is plenty of restaurants to choose from. Whatever you like I guarantee they will probably have it. From Greek to Italian, to Mexican to Chinese. So next time, stop by, take a walk, it's a kiddos place.
