Episode 11: Vancouver

Day 1: Crossing The Border

Our family decided to make the most of a long December weekend by taking a quick trip from Seattle to Vancouver, BC. We started our journey bright and early, crossing the border into Canada without issues, however on the weekends expect longer lines and wait times. The scenic drive from Seattle to Vancouver was a breeze, with stunning views of the Pacific Northwest landscape guiding our way.

Upon arriving in Vancouver, the city was celebrating Christmas with nearly lights on every single building. We went straight for downtown to kick off our adventure. We parked near Canada Place and took a walk around the waterfront, where we were greeted by the most friendliest people, towering skyscrapers, and a vibrant atmosphere.

Did You know?

Vancouver, known for its stunning mountain views and vibrant culture, harbors a quirky secret that adds to its allure. The city is home to the world's narrowest building - the Sam Kee Building in Chinatown. Built in 1913, this surprising structure measures a mere six feet wide at its broadest point, earning it the title of the narrowest commercial building globally by the Guinness World Records. Despite its slim profile, the Sam Kee Building has become a beloved landmark, attracting curious visitors eager to witness this architectural marvel in the heart of Vancouver.

Our first stop was our Hotel in Burnaby. Across from our hotel was the Metrotown mall, loaded with trendy boutiques and souvenir shops and of course a visit from Santa. In Gastown you can find a cozy spot and dig into a heaping plate of crispy fries smothered in gravy. After lunch, explore the historic streets of Gastown, admiring the iconic steam clock and snapping photos of the charming cobblestone alleys. Sometime you might even managed to catch the steam-powered clock's hourly whistle! As the afternoon turned to evening, we made our way back to our hotel to rest up for another exciting day ahead.

Day 2: Stanley Park and Granville Island

Day 2 of our weekend getaway was packed with outdoor adventures and culinary delights. As we get our day started, being the Stanleys, it was a must to visit Stanley Park, Vancouver's beloved urban oasis. There, you can rent bikes and pedal your way around the seawall, marveling at the breathtaking views of the ocean, mountains, and city skyline. The kids had a blast spotting wildlife and exploring the park's many playgrounds and beaches.

After working up an appetite, make your way to Granville Island for lunch. The public market is a feast for the senses, with stalls brimming with fresh produce, gourmet goodies, and artisanal crafts. Indulged in a seafood feast, sampling freshly shucked oysters, fish and chips, and creamy clam chowder.

Fun fact about Metrotown
